BNPL Transparency
Pay later should not feel like a trap.
Try the prototype
I built this prototype to explore what a transparent BNPL checkout experience could look like. The flow shows how payment timelines and consequences can be communicated clearly without showing a credit score.
This prototype covers the customer checkout and payment transparency flow. The merchant configuration screens are excluded from this view.
Problem
Most BNPL products tell customers what they owe but not what happens if they miss a payment. Customers sign up without understanding the consequences and end up surprised when access is paused or their credit history is affected.
The insight came from personal experience. I signed up for a course on installments and only found out about the credit consequences after missing a payment. Nobody told me upfront.
What I built
A BNPL checkout prototype focused on transparency before commitment.
The customer sees the full payment schedule before confirming, exactly when each installment will be collected and on what date.
Key design decision: no credit score displayed. Showing a credit score at checkout reduces BNPL adoption because it makes customers anxious. Simple plain-language consequences achieve the same transparency without the fear.
The consequences shown are:
Pay on time, access continues normally.
Miss a payment, access is paused until resolved. A reminder is sent before any action is taken.
Extended default, escalated to the BNPL provider. The merchant is not involved because in BNPL the merchant receives full payment upfront from the BNPL provider. Collections is the BNPL provider's responsibility entirely.
Pre-debit reminders sent 24 to 48 hours before each installment so customers are never caught off guard.
Key decisions
Remove credit score display. Show payment timeline not credit impact. Frame consequences around access not punishment.
Outcome
Presented to a Group PM at a leading subscription billing company. Feedback confirmed payment timeline transparency was the right direction. Demonstrated proactive product thinking beyond current role scope.
Built as a personal initiative to explore fintech product thinking. Not a Foodhub product.
